Wakefield AFC will change its club badge for 23/24 season

Wakefield AFC is thrilled to announce that it will be changing its club badge to celebrate its move to the City of Wakefield. The new badge will incorporate elements that represent the City of Wakefield and Wakefield AFC values.

According to Gui Decca, Wakefield AFC Chairman of the Board, the decision came after an extensive consultation process with Wakefield historians, council members, and fans. “Our current badge, featuring the Yorkshire rose and the miner’s pike, are generic symbols that do not accurately represent our club or the City of Wakefield,” Decca explains. “While the miner’s pike is part of the region’s heritage, it does not reflect our club’s history since we were founded in 2019. Moreover, the Yorkshire rose is a symbol that represents a large region and is used by many other clubs, so it does not give us a unique identity. During this research we believe we have found elements that will better engage our community “.

To help in this project Wakefield AFC has enlisted football designer Christopher Payne.

Payne is a well-known football designer and has worked with several other football, and most recently designed York City’s new badge celebrating their 100-year anniversary. “We are thrilled to work with Christopher Payne to create a unique visual identity. One of the advantages of being a young club is that we can approach challenges from a fresh angle. Every detail has to be carefully considered to help define our core values” said Andre Ikeda, Wakefield AFC Board member. “We are confident that the new badge will be a better reflection of what Wakefield AFC is and can become.”

The change to the club’s visual identity comes ahead of its move to the City of Wakefield, and the new design will be implemented across all of the club’s branding and marketing materials, including its website, social media platforms, and merchandise. The club plans to unveil the new design before the start of the next season.

“This initiative and move to the city of Wakefield mark a new phase for the club. A lot was done in the past 15 months to recover the club’s image and finances. Now it’s time to look forward and keep working to grow the club within the community. Our commitment to the city and this project is stronger than ever and we are excited about the future” concludes Decca.
