The Real Junk Food Project Remains As Official Charity Partner

Wakefield AFC are delighted to announce that The Real Junk Food Project will continue as our Official Charity Partner for the 2021/22 season.

Our two organisations share the desire to support the local area through community initiatives. Both use a Pay As You Feel model where possible; customers of The Real Junk Food Project sharehouses are welcome to make donations towards the organisation in exchange for food, and tickets for Wakefield AFC games are released on a PAYF basis on match-days.

Set up by Adam Smith in 2013, The Real Junk food Project aims to bring about radical change in the structures of our food supply systems. The Leeds-based project intercepts and re-distributes surplus food from many different areas of the food industry. Much ‘waste’ food is simply surplus; in the wrong place, or in the wrong packaging, and is completely safe to eat. The project brings that food back into the food supply chain using its Pay As You Feel supermarkets; redistribution to charity partners; access to Freegan boxes at local hubs and its catering services and PAYF Cafe. Since it’s creation in 2013, TRJFP has inspired over 120 projects globally; and stopped 7,000 tons of food from becoming waste, the equivalent of 16.6 million meals.

The successful partnership with the club through the 2020/21 season saw The Real Junk Food Project selling Wakefield AFC shirts through their Wakefield Sharehouse, and receiving a donation from us for every shirt that was sold. The club will continue with this donation with £5 from every shirt sale being donated to the Charity. In 2020/21 the club donated £550 to TRJFP and we aim to beat that this coming season.

The Real Junk Food Project founder, Adam Smith said, “Partnering with Wakefield AFC provides The Real Junk Food Project with exciting opportunities to work with Wakefield AFC as they grow and consolidate their position in both the football league and across the local community.”

Commercial Manager, Adam Sweeney added, “We have a great partnership with The Real Junk Food Project and we are proud to support the Charity and what they do. We will be developing the partnership over the next twelve months, introducing new initiatives that will not only benefit the club and the Charity, but the local community as well.”

As the pandemic restrictions are eased, we hope to find many more opportunities to work together for the benefit of the people of Wakefield, including plans for a Real Junk Food Project hub at the ground and volunteering opportunities for the Wakefield AFC players at The Real Junk Food Project events and hubs.

Wakefield AFC are still on the lookout for partners for the 2021/22 season and beyond. If you want to get involved with the club, please email us on commercial@wakefieldafc.co.uk
