Wakefield AFC Finds Home In Featherstone

We are delighted to announce that we will be playing out of a WF postcode as we join forces with Betfred Championship Rugby League Club, Featherstone Rovers, to give the club a new home for the 20/21 season.

The partnership will see the First Team and Reserve team train and play out of the Millennium Stadium. The 7000 seated stadium is situated just 15 minutes outside Wakefield City Centre and will allow the club to continue to grow and move towards becoming the first professional football club in Wakefield.

Our First Team will continue to play in the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior Premier Division for the 2020/21 season, while the Reserves will move from the Central Midlands League to join Division 2 of the Sheffield & Hallamshire County Senior League for the 2020/21 season.

The Wakefield AFC Development Squads will return to train and play out of The Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth.
Our U16 & U18’s development teams will join the NERF Junior Premier League for the 2020/21 Season.

Wakefield AFC Owner, Mike Hegarty, commented:

“We are delighted to have been invited to share our season and ambition with Featherstone. We continue to build our future with local professionals and both Wakefield Trinity and Featherstone Rovers have just been so welcoming and supportive to a fledgling club. We really do hope that we can provide the base to attract a few rugby fans throughout the district to help us grow. As a child I watched Fev in the 1950’s so this partnership is very special. Thanks for bringing us onboard! “

Wakefield AFC Director of Football, Chris Turner, added:

“It is a massive step forward for the club to enter into a partnership with professional rugby league club, Featherstone Rovers. I have to say how welcoming they have been towards ourselves. The training and playing facilities are first class, our players I am sure will enjoy the professional surroundings and a top class playing surface. Today represents a major step forward in the club’s history.”

First Team Manager, Adam Lockwood, also added:

“This partnership for our club, that is ambitious and looking to build for a bright future, is great. We will be looking to help each other move forward to achieve where we both want to be; it’s great to be part of another community club that has similar ambitions and will help all members of our club present and new. I am looking forward to working with everyone at Featherstone Rovers for a bright future for both clubs.”

CEO of Featherstone Rovers, Davide Longo, added:

“We are delighted to announce that Wakefield AFC will be playing their 2020/21 home fixtures here at the Millennium Stadium. We believe that our stadium is the best in the district and this partnership shows that our facilities are at a high standard. They are an ambitious club who share similar goals as us when it comes to promotion and expanding their profile both on and off the pitch, this move for both sides means we can aim to achieve our objectives under one roof. “
