Wakefield A.F.C is delighted to announce the formation of a women’s team for the 2021/22 season!
The decision to launch is subsequent to the great progress that has already been made by the club. With four teams already playing on a Saturday, and the further development of the academy, the club will now look to develop the women’s side of the club.
Further to this, the club is already making plans to develop the women’s team with the introduction of younger age groups in the following year.
Wakefield AFC Owner Mike Hegarty, is delighted by the launch of the women’s team and said:
“The growth and interest in the fledgling Wakefield A.F.C over the past 18 months has been astonishing. Not only does the first team attract the highest level of support in the UK for a club at it’s level, but we also already put out four elite sides on a Saturday, mostly recruited from local talent. Next year we plan to raise this to ten sides and we already are well on the way to this.
However, to really raise the awareness of the club within Wakefield to our growing number of fans (currently in excess of 4000), we realised recently that we need to use our base and contacts to build a strong women’s section that train and play alongside our male teams. Ideally we would have chosen to combine with a local organisation but sadly that was not to be and our requests were rejected.
We have therefore taken on the exciting challenge of developing our own Wakefield A.F.C Women’s Team via our contacts and extended team to try and fast track a strong team and its young base support in tandem with our men’s section. Excitingly we plan to offer all our female members exactly the same opportunity as the men’s with full-time education, UEFA grade coaching and the opportunity to play out of a first class venue in Featherstone.
We are also very confident in our ability to attract additional commercial sponsorship that we hope will help facilitate our ambitious plans. Already we have secured a significant deal with the sports brand FBT Thailand and have engaged with two large organisations linking us to the strong USA market.
We now begin our task of recruitment and attracting local players having already secured the services of some very experienced coaches in the women’s game.
