We are excited to announce that The Real Junk Food Project has become the club’s official charity partner for the 2020/21 season. The Real Junk Food Project will also feature on the right arm of the Home, Away and 3rd Shirt for the new season.
From one humble Armley cafe set up in 2013, The Real Junk Food Project has grown into an organic global network and inspired over 120 projects in 7 countries. The Real Junk Food Project has saved 5000 tonnes of food, the equivalent of 11.9 million meals. Multiple cafes have opened not just across the UK but around the world, and they continue to grow.
The Real Junk Food Project HQ, which is now in Wakefield, is their Kindness Sharehouse – a social supermarket stocked only with intercepted food, which is open 7 days a week. The team is mainly staffed by volunteers, without whom the work across the UK would not be possible.
The club is delighted about this partnership and will be doing all it can to support this fantastic cause, therefore we have decided that £5 from EVERY shirt sale will be donated to The Real Junk Food Project.
Adam Smith, founder of The Real Junk Food Project said: “Wakefield has shown amazing hospitality to The Real Junk Food Project since we opened our Kindness Sharehouse in the city in September 2018, acting as a central hub to all of our work to intercept surplus food and redistribute it. As Covid hit, we opened a second site in the Ridings Centre, where we run our Zero Waste Shop and sell our magic boxes and Pay as You Feel surplus food, in our pledge to feed bellies, not bins. The funds we kindly receive from Wakefield AFC will go towards the day to day running of our social enterprise as we continue to grow and prepare our facilities for the long road to recovery from the challenges of this year. We wish Wakefield AFC all the luck for the season ahead and are so thankful for the club’s support and kindness.”
Commercial Manager, Adam Sweeney added: “It’s great for the club to partner with The Real Junk Food Project. They do some fantastic work, not only for the community of Wakefield, but all over the world. We want to support Adam and the guys at The Real Junk Food Project as much as possible, and donating £5 from every shirt sale and promoting them on the sleeve of our playing shirts will go a long way in supporting them.”
Our 2020/21 shirts will go on sale on Monday 10th August!
