Wakefield AFC is a semi-professional community-focused football club formed in 2019 to bring senior football back to Wakefield, West Yorkshire – a city that had been without a men’s side since the dissolution of Wakefield FC in 2014.
Placement Description:
The role of Volunteer Strength and Conditioning Coach at Wakefield AFC offers a hands-on opportunity to assist in delivering both on-field physical conditioning and gym-based strength and conditioning support to youth players. This position is ideal for undergraduates, postgraduates, or individuals already qualified in Sports Science or Strength and Conditioning. Volunteers will gain invaluable practical experience in a football environment while assisting with player development and injury prevention.
- Learn how to interpret and collate GPS data using relevant software to produce objective reports for coaching staff.
- Lead warm-ups, cool-downs, and recovery sessions to optimize performance and minimise injury risk.
- Assist in developing and implementing injury prevention programs for players.
- Monitor player progress through assessments, testing, and data analysis, adjusting training programs as necessary.
- Maintain a professional and motivating training environment.

About The Candidate
Person Specification:
Essential:
- A strong passion for player development and a clear understanding of the demands of youth football.
- Previous experience in providing strength and conditioning support in a sports or football environment.
- Experience conducting physical tests for youth athletes.
- Currently studying Sports Science or a related course, or already qualified in a relevant field.
- FA Safeguarding Children course (or willingness to complete).
- Must satisfactorily pass an FA DBS Enhanced check.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work as part of a team and develop professional relationships.
- Enthusiastic, forward-thinking, and committed to personal and professional growth.
- A solid understanding of anatomy and the ability to apply this knowledge in practice.
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
- First Aid and CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends to support matchday and training schedules.
- Honest, reliable, and trustworthy.
