WAKEFIELD AFC v HORBURY TOWN MATCHPREVIEW

It’s derby day as Horbury Town pay a visit to the Millenium Stadium for a clash of two Wakefield-based clubs.

One of the league’s early pacesetters will make their way over to WF7 this evening for a big midweek clash under the lights, with The Falcons looking to build on yet another solid cup win over the bank holiday weekend.

Now a month into the season, the league is beginning to take a bit of shape and tonight’s game will represent a game involving both ends of the table, albeit with a hefty two game advantage in favour of the visitors.

OUR LAST MATCH

Belle Vue played host to Wakefield’s last ever game there, and The Falcons bid farewell to it’s temporary home with a victory in the FA Vase Cup against 1874 Northwich.

With just one win in four in the league, Wakefield have found solace in the cup so far, and the FA’s own cup competition for both Step Five and Step Six clubs provided yet another dose of that over the course of the weekend.

1874 Northwich, who as of last season were two steps above Wakefield, came as formidable opponents. But Wakefield very much held their own throughout, despite not holding the ball as much as they’re used to in the league

As ever, the only stat that counts is the amount of times the ball hits the back of the net. And Wakefield’s side delivered, with some new additions in the form of Abdul Asamoah and Akeel Francis – the latter who has played at the heights of Step Two in England and League One in Scotland.

Seb Losa continued his strong cup form, adding another goal to his tally this season, with James Eyles – a new addition to the squad – making an instant impact by bagging Wakefield’s second goal off the bench to round off a solid victory against opposition from the higher reaches of the pyramid.

OUR OPPONENTS

Sitting second in the league table, Horbury Town are one of the early pacesetters with a 100% record in their opening five games.

Occupying the runners-up spot with a game in hand on league-leaders Wombwell, Town have racked up five wins against Nostell Miners Welfare, South Leeds, Selby Town, Shelley and Swallownest – notching up 12 goals in the process and conceding just one goal – making their defence the least porous in the division so far.

PAST MEETINGS

The two sides have met four times so far during Wakefield’s short history, with the two meetings last season providing good value with 11 goals in both games.

The last game hosted by The Falcons was an absolute 4-3 humdinger with Wakefield clinching the win in the dying embers of the game, wrapping up one of the games of the season.

Here’s how the last four meetings have gone:

22nd Oct 2022: Wakefield AFC 0-2 Horbury Town 29 March 2023: Horbury Town 0-1 Wakefield AFC 9th Sept 2023: Wakefield AFC 4-3 Horbury Town

26th December 2023: Horbury Town 2-2 Wakefield AFC
