The Falcons are back on the road this Saturday for the first of two clashes against Dronfield Town in the space of four days.
This weekend’s tie will see the two sides meet in the NCEL Division One, as Wakey look to get their season up and running with first win of the season down at Dronfield’s HE Barnes Stadium on Saturday 10th August at 3pm.
If recent meetings are anything to go by, then we’re in for a humdinger of a game, as the last four meetings have seen 18 goals between the two sides, crucially, with Wakefield AFC coming out the victors on all four occasions.
And the men in white, blue and red will be raring to make it a fifth win against Dronfield and therefore a first league win in the infancy of the 2024/25 season, where the club will be looking to go one better than last season and win promotion to the NCEL Premier Division.
OUR LAST MATCH
Wakefield couldn’t let their dominance show, falling to a 2-1 defeat to newly-promoted Dearne & District at Belle Vue. The Falcons dominated possession, with a 73% share of the ball and almost triple the number of passes compared to our counterparts.
But as the saying goes, the only stat that matters is the number of goals scored, and Dearne & District’s two second half goals meant that for all Wakefield’s superiority in possession, the game ultimately ended in defeat.
The game presented positives to take away from the game which the group will be looking to take into their trip to Dronfield this weekend. You can read about our opponents below.
OUR OPPONENTS
So far, it’s been a mixed bag from the men just south of Sheffield, with one win and two losses on the board.
Dronfield opened the season with a strong 4-1 win against South Leeds, before falling to a 4-2 defeat in another high-scoring game against newly-promoted Dearne & District – who we lost to in our last game.
Their latest tie was a narrow 1-0 loss to Swallownest, which sees the club currently in 12th place. Although, as we know, it’s far too early in the season to read into league positions just yet.
Ones to watch: Mark Fereday, who has come off the bench twice and scored two goals and Max Rhodes, who’s scored 3 goals in as many games so far.
PAST MEETINGS
Goals galore is the phrase we’re looking for. As previously mentioned, our last four ties together have seen the net rustle 18 times and Dronfield’s opening three games this season have already seen 12 goals scored.
Here’s how the last four meetings have gone:
Dronfield Town 2 – 3 Wakefield AFC (16 December 2023)
Wakefield AFC 4 – 0 Dronfield Town(15 August 2023)
Wakefield AFC 4 – 2 Dronfield Town (22 October 2022)
Dronfield Town 0 – 3 Wakefield AFC (17 September 2022)
