Saturday’s game was referred to by many as a ‘proper’ game of football. It wasn’t a match where Wakefield had the result wrapped up by half-time as they did against Frecheville, Eccleshill and Burngreave. Nor was it a game where they threw away win in the dying minutes as they did against Oughtibridge. This was a match where the opposition applied a lot of pressure when Wakefield had the ball and it was generally the type where both defences had better games than the attackers.
Jubilee Sports took the lead in the opening minutes when a defensive mix-up allowed their player to slot it home at the far post. After Wakefield had started so well in recent matches, it was the first time they’d been behind at home since the first match against Dodworth Miners Welfare.
The response from Wakefield was a strong one with Rayjon Moore, Deji Alabi and Manny Katundu all having shots either saved or blocked. Moore equalised for the home side mid-way through the first half after chasing a long back pass to the opposition’s goalkeeper.
Moore then made it six for the season in the second half. Alabi had been causing the full backs problems all game and he was brought down in the box. Moore stepped up to take the penalty and confidently stroked the ball into the top right corner to give Wakefield the lead. Katundu then sealed the win with his fifth goal in three games, after cutting back inside on to his left foot and slotting the ball home.
Wakefield could’ve had another penalty late on in the game with Deji Alabi causing problems again, but the free kick was awarded to Jubilee and Alabi was booked for simulation. In the arguing melee that followed, Yemi Ayodele was booked for the home side as well as one of the Jubilee players. Earlier in the match was also the first time we have seen the sin bin used this season, as a Jubilee Sports midfielder was off the field for ten minutes for dissent.
The important thing from a scrappy performance though was that Wakefield claimed all three points and now move up to fifth in the table. We also saw the introduction of new attacker Mo Hamid from the bench but he had too little time on the ball to make an impact on the score.
